Should You Study Massage Therapy Full-Time or Part-Time?

Program Planning & Scheduling

Full-Time vs. Part-Time Massage School: Which Schedule Fits Your Life?

Choosing between an accelerated 6-month path and a 12-month extended format depends on more than graduation dates. Here is a transparent breakdown of class days, outside commitments, and how to plan realistically around work and family.

Accelerated Track

6-Month Full-Time Diploma

Best suited for students who can commit fully to daytime immersion and want to enter the workforce as quickly as possible.

  • Duration: 24 Weeks (~6 Months)
  • Days: Monday through Thursday
  • Hours: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Classroom: ~24 hours/week
Prioritizes: Fastest path to NC state licensure

Extended Track

12-Month Part-Time Diploma

Designed for working parents, caregivers, and career-changers who need dedicated weekdays reserved for life obligations.

  • Duration: 48 Weeks (~12 Months)
  • Semester 1: Mon & Tue (8:00 AM – 3:00 PM)
  • Semester 2: Wed & Thu (8:00 AM – 3:00 PM)
  • Classroom: ~12 hours/week
Limited seating: Prioritized by schedule necessity

What Your Week at NC Massage School Would Look Like

Unlike online degrees or evening-only seminars, accredited massage therapy training is intensive, hands-on, and tied to strict state contact hours. Both full-time and part-time tracks at NC Massage School take place during fixed daytime hours at our Cornelius campus.

Notice for Part-Time Applicants: The Mid-Year Day Shift

Notice how part-time attendance shifts: you will attend Mondays and Tuesdays during your first semester, but switch to Wednesdays and Thursdays for your second semester. If you are coordinating childcare or employer scheduling, verify in advance that your arrangements can accommodate this mid-year weekday rotation.

Can You Work While Attending Massage School?

The candid answer is: yes, but it depends entirely on your job’s flexibility. Because all classes meet between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., keeping a traditional Monday-through-Friday 9-to-5 desk job is almost impossible without major schedule adjustments from your employer.

Students who successfully maintain employment during their training typically fall into one of three categories:

1. Evening & Weekend Employment

Hospitality, healthcare shifts, retail, or service industry jobs after 4:00 p.m. or on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday align well with both full-time and part-time tracks.

2. Three-Day Part-Time Work Weeks

Part-time students attend class two days a week, leaving three standard weekdays open. Students often work Wednesday through Friday in their first semester, then shift to Monday, Tuesday, and Friday in their second semester.

3. Asynchronous Remote or Freelance Work

Professionals with flexible hours who control their own deadlines can study during the day and complete their work late in the afternoon or on weekends.

The Homework & Practice Factor: Plan for 5 to 8 Hours Weekly

Class hours alone do not represent your entire time investment. To succeed on written board examinations and practical evaluations, instructors advise students to plan for an additional 5 to 8 hours per week outside the classroom.

This window includes reading kinesiology and pathology modules, memorizing muscle origins and insertions, completing written workbook assignments, and practicing hands-on bodywork sequences on friends and family before clinical evaluations.

Admissions Policy: How Part-Time Enrollment Is Allocated

Because physical classroom spaces, treatment tables, and clinical faculty supervision are strictly regulated, part-time enrollment capacity is limited for each entering cohort.

Part-time seats are prioritized for applicants whose essential obligations, such as solo childcare, eldercare, or non-negotiable daytime work hours, prevent them from attending the full-time program. If your schedule allows you to attend Monday through Thursday, we strongly encourage you to apply for the full-time track to secure your placement and complete your Massage Therapy Diploma Program faster.
