Sports massage was reported in the New York Times recently as one of the fast-growing specializations in the world of massage therapy. It is often learned after a person has received a general massage therapy certification. Its focus is to address the massage needs of athlete’s pre-event, post-event and in cases of sports-related injuries. It requires a different type of massage work and different treatment goals during each phase. Cecil Roebuck, massage therapist for the Olympics, explains that sports massage is frequently employed before an event for the purpose of helping the athlete to warm up critical muscle groups; during the post-event recovery phase to facilitate the removal of use-induced toxins such as lactic acid; and to treat injuries, which commonly include those created by overuse and excessive strain.

The licensed massage therapist should learn how to provide a good basic massage before attempting to specialize in sports massage or any other specific modality. Sports massage is offered at the site of various athletic events most of the time , which with this weekend a comprehensive amount of time is dedicated to the preparation to attend a mandatory 5 (five) events to complete the 25 CEU’s awarded when complete.

This seminar is designed to better enhance the practicing massage therapist towards the fast paced and advancing popularity of sports massage. When the weekend is over, the work begins. We will offer 12 weekends of events locally that the attendee will be required to complete 5 (five) of. This brings the weekend of learning to a real point of return. The therapist will be required to bring their table, facial coverings for the head rest and a good attitude. Along with the application of sports massage they will be able to market themselves to the sports participant by having business cards on hand to distribute.

There will be a pre-test on Friday night based on muscle attachments and actions just to make sure you are ready to move into the sports massage world. Also Friday evening we will go over the reading expected and books required for the weekend. The two books you will need to bring with you are”Active Isolated Stretching” by Aaron L. Mattes and “The Sieg and Adams Illustrated Essentials”. These will be the reference materials used throughout the weekend of sports massage. We will have several copies for sale that weekend if you cannot find them through a book store yourself.

We look forward to seeing you for this learning experience, and any further questions can be directed to NC Massage School in Cornelius NC.

We are a fully furnished massage school facility and provide Oakworks massage tables, linens, class tables, and computer/projector for overhead presentations.
